Dr Cara Thompson

Background experience

I am a Clinical Psychologist experienced in working with individuals and families in NHS settings and private practice. I currently work as a Principal Clinical Psychologist in an NHS outpatient Neuropsychology service providing neuropsychological assessment, rehabilitation and therapy to individuals with neurological conditions including acquired brain injury, brain tumour, and progressive neurological conditions. I have worked throughout the neuro-rehabilitation pathway, working with individuals at the very start of their rehabilitation journey in a hyperacute inpatient rehabilitation service, all the way through to outpatient and community settings. I am able to adopt a flexible approach in working with cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes following brain injury or within the context of other health or neurological conditions. I also have experience in providing assessment and consultation within the context of complex mental health difficulties where there may also be co-occurring neurological concerns.

I have completed additional psychological therapy training and regularly use third wave cognitive behaviour therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) in my therapeutic work. I provide teaching, research supervision, and placements to Trainee Clinical Psychologists within my NHS roles. I am currently completing additional training in Clinical Neuropsychology. I am able to offer appointments in person or remote video appointments.
