Dr Rachel Lancaster

Background experience

I have worked in the NHS for around ten years, and have been a practising Chartered Clinical Psychologist since completing my training in Bangor, North Wales. Although I am trained to work with individuals experiencing a range of mental health difficulties and difficulties coping across the lifespan, I work primarily with young children and the systems around them. For example I may work directly with a child to help understand him or her better using neuropsychological assessment, help teach him or her skills to manage anxiety, or complete play sessions to help a child work through a difficult event; or I may work with families or schools offering advice and support to help shape the environment to work towards improving a child’s behaviour. I generally work behaviourally using concepts such as reward and reinforcement, focusing on shaping a child’s behaviour and teaching the child new skills to replace his or her more challenging behaviour; or in a more narrative way to help young children to understand their feelings and work towards shifting these. My main areas of interest are autism, separation anxiety and child sleep problems. I am available to provide group work, training and consultation to children, families and other professionals. I additionally undertake medico-legal work.
